Search Me, O God
Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me, and know my anxieties; and see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
Psalm 139:23-24
Focus on Christ
Do you really want to know what your heart is like? Are you loyal to God? Do you have enough confidence in how you are living to ask God to search your heart? If you ask God to search your heart, then He will reveal your ways.
David knew what his life had endured. He had been an innocent and godly shepherd boy before he became a king with a heart for God. Tragedy came into his life the moment he broke fellowship with God. He committed a sin that was felt in his family and relationships for the rest of his life. He understood the seriousness of sin and the devastating consequences. After being confronted by the prophet Nathan, he deeply repented and returned to a close relationship with God.
When David asked God to search his heart, he knew what that meant. His sin had crippled his emotions, sleep, and physical and mental health. David wanted God to see his loyal heart.
Do you want to show your loyalty to God? If you repent quickly after God shows you sin, then you show yourself to be loyal. Repentance shows a willingness to be vulnerable. Admit to sin and desire restoration. Then, you will discover life everlasting.
Focus on Self
When your mind is focused on self, you do not care about your wicked way. In fact, you desire that way. It is not until you are so miserable with what self has left behind that you turn to God and ask Him to show you your heart. This only comes from a person who is willing to change. Until you reach this point, you will be satisfied with going your own way. Self believes everything is someone else’s fault. Until you can realize that no one but yourself is responsible for your sin, you will not seek help from God. Are you loyal to God?
